A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
