Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was natural for concerns to be asked about his position after a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, marking the team's poorest run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a tough evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I've received plenty of support from above,” Slot commented.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and secure a win of course but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to elaborate on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach revealed:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me all the time each day to say they back me.”
He added, “During our regular exchanges I sense the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Problems and Player Reaction
Slot expressed regret over known weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his view of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder said.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to consider it. I'm beyond getting mad internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I play for the team I support. I support them, and I've watched Liverpool all my life.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Reds side experiencing a phase such as this with outcomes like these.”
He concluded, “But we still have the emblem on our shirts. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to compete.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to the top, prove again what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
