Asahi Recommences Beer Production After a Cyber Incident

The company has partially restarted manufacturing at all six breweries in the nation after it was obliged to halt them because of a online intrusion.

Several major retailers in Japan, including key retail outlets, had warned recently that they had dwindling supplies of inventories of Asahi products after the hack impacted the brewer's ordering and delivery systems across Japan.

The firm is the top beer producer in the nation, but it furthermore manufactures non-alcoholic beverages and food products, as well as supplying own-brand goods to various sellers.

The slowly resumed plants manufacture best-seller their flagship beer, but the firm is also restarting factories that produce consumables and drinks.

Wider Effects of the Online Intrusion

The security incident is the most recent to have influenced functions at major firms, with carmaker an international car company yet to fully recover from an incident that ceased output.

The corporation also owns Fullers in the UK and global brands for instance a range of alcoholic drinks. However, exclusively the company's activities in the nation - which represent about half its earnings - have been affected by the attack.

Current Production Condition

Asahi said the re-opened beer plants in the country were "not yet fully operational", and that a pair of their drink manufacturing facilities that have gradually restarted were also not running at maximum output.

It added there were a further five drink production sites that "will resume slowly in accordance with shipments."

Each of the seven of its consumable manufacturing sites have resumed operations, though they are also not yet fully operational.

Asahi said the manufacturing infrastructure at the plants directly had not been affected by the cyber-attack, but it had been forced to halt production because it could not process purchases and distribution.

Recovery Timeline

Last week, officials mentioned it was "cannot give a definite schedule for restoration" but that it was partnering with third-party online security professionals to recover its systems as promptly as achievable.
