Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
