Tropical Storm the storm is projected to become a rare Category 5 cyclone as it turns toward Jamaica, bringing life-threatening sudden floods and landslides.

This weather system, which registered wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean and is expected to hit the coast by Tuesday, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Alerts of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as the hurricane produces up to 30 inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," residents have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th cyclone in the ongoing Atlantic season, which normally finishes in November.

Highest-Level Storm Threat

A highest-level cyclone is the strongest type, with winds of at least 157mph.

Even though this storm is projected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 storm before making landfall on Jamaica, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the nation.

With tropical storm-level winds and rain already expected ahead of it crosses the island's interior - possibly even the capital, Kingston - warnings emphasize that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and intense precipitation has started and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and multiple rock slides," counseled weather authorities.

Jamaican Prime Minister the official stated: "I realize that there are countless citizens who are anxious, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: concern is justified.

"However the best way to manage anxiety and any nervousness and worry is to stay ready."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with protective bags and timber panels, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Warnings are also ongoing for regions of Haiti encompassing the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Landslides presently generated by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Projected Trajectory

The hurricane is predicted to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and entering the open ocean.

By the point it reaches Cuba, it is anticipated to have weakened to a category three cyclone.
