England's Assistant Coach Explains His Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry was playing at a lower division club. Now, he's dedicated to assist Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His path from athlete to trainer began through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny.

Metoric Climb

His advancement stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs included elite sides, while also serving in international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a systematic approach so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. The approach include player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a break,” he explains. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“There are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To create a system enabling productivity in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the adaptability, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide an approach that enables them to operate similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in attack and defense – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group featured big names including former players. For self-improvement, he went into difficult settings available to him to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He completed the course as the best in his year, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included won over and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he got Barry out of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
