Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
