Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
