Meteorologists have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, making extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on public transport.

Readings Forecast to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Issued

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is completely essential.
