Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed
Currently exist "no plans" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.
Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".
The administration did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Previous Developments
The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.
Certain accounts claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders suggesting Trump had urged him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Freeze the lines the way it is," he remarked.
Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the current line of contact.
Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.
Diplomatic Positions
The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.
The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.
He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.
Weapons Discussions
Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.
The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he commented.
