The Mayor-Elect states his intention to live in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, was not quick to announce he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain inside me and my work," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
