The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
