The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
